    Politics and Advocacy: A Dilettante\u27s View of Archival Activism

    In June of this year I had the dubious honor of testifying in front of a congressional committee during the Louisiana State Legislative Session. My testimony was in response to a public records bill that had passed through the State Senate and was under consideration in the House Committee for Governmental Affairs. It was an honor because I was allowed to represent the officers and executive board of the Louisiana Archives and Manuscript Association (LAMA), of which I am an active member. I had been following the progress of the bill in question and had drafted a letter in opposition that was endorsed by the LAMA leadership and forwarded to committee staff. Along with two other LAMA colleagues, I accepted an invitation to the meeting. I characterize the experience as dubious because our appearance was arranged with very little notice, I was not entirely sure what to expect, and as I sat through the meeting before making my statement it became apparent that whatever we had to say would not make any difference

    A Reckless Verisimilitude: The Archive in James Ellroy’s Fiction

    The archive as both plot element and narrative presentation factors significantly into the work of James Ellroy’s novels in the L.A. Quartet and USA Underworld Trilogy series. This article examines the important role of the archive as a source of information and evidence that Ellroy’s characters utilize in their attempts at either maintaining or attacking the status quo. Through these novels, Ellroy conveys the potential power archives wield over the trajectory of history and our understanding of it by demonstrating how the historical record is often shaped in favor of the powerful. Yet even if the archive is a manifestation of the power narratives that dominate society in any given time, it also holds the potential to reveal truths that disrupt that power

    Hyperspace geography: Visualizing fitness landscapes beyond 4D

    Human perception is finely tuned to extract structure about the 4D world of time and space as well as properties such as color and texture. Developing intuitions about spatial structure beyond 4D requires exploiting other perceptual and cognitive abilities. One of the most natural ways to explore complex spaces is for a user to actively navigate through them, using local explorations and global summaries to develop intuitions about structure, and then testing the developing ideas by further exploration. This article provides a brief overview of a technique for visualizing surfaces defined over moderate-dimensional binary spaces, by recursively unfolding them onto a 2D hypergraph. We briefly summarize the uses of a freely available Web-based visualization tool, Hyperspace Graph Paper (HSGP), for exploring fitness landscapes and search algorithms in evolutionary computation. HSGP provides a way for a user to actively explore a landscape, from simple tasks such as mapping the neighborhood structure of different points, to seeing global properties such as the size and distribution of basins of attraction or how different search algorithms interact with landscape structure. It has been most useful for exploring recursive and repetitive landscapes, and its strength is that it allows intuitions to be developed through active navigation by the user, and exploits the visual system's ability to detect pattern and texture. The technique is most effective when applied to continuous functions over Boolean variables using 4 to 16 dimensions

    The timing of maternal depressive symptoms and child cognitive development: a longitudinal study.

    Background: Maternal depression is known to be associated with impairments in child cognitive development, although the effect of timing of exposure to maternal depression is unclear. Methods: Data collected for the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, a longitudinal study beginning in pregnancy, included self-report measures of maternal depression the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, completed on 6 occasions up to 3 years of age, and IQ of the index child (WISC) measured at aged 8 years. We used these data to assign women to 8 groups according to whether depression occurred in the antenatal, postnatal, preschool period, any combination of these times, or not at all. We compared a model comprising all patterns of depression (saturated model) with models nested within this to test whether there is a relationship between depression and child cognitive development and, if so, whether there is a sensitive period. We then investigated the relationship with child IQ for each model, following adjustment for confounders. Results: Six thousand seven hundred and thirty-five of 13,615 children from singleton births (49.5%, of eligible core sample) attended a research clinic at 8 years and completed a WISC with a score ≥ 70. A total of 5,029 mothers of these children had completed mood assessments over the 3 time periods. In unadjusted analyses, all three sensitive period models were as good as the saturated model, as was an accumulation model. Of the sensitive period models, only that for antenatal exposure was a consistently better fit than the accumulation model. After multiple imputation for missing data (to n = 6,735), there was no effect of postnatal depression on child IQ independent of depression at other times [-0.19 IQ points, 95% confidence interval (CI) -1.5 to 1.1 points]. There was an effect of antenatal depression (-3.19 IQ points, 95% CI: -4.33 to -2.06) which attenuated following adjustment (-0.64 IQ points, 95% CI: -1.68 to 0.40). Conclusions: The postnatal period is not a sensitive one for the effect of maternal depression on child cognitive development. © 2011 The Authors. Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry

    Immediate post-isometric exercise cardiovascular responses are associated with training-induced resting systolicblood pressure reductions

    Purpose: The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to investigate the effect of four-weeks of bilateral-leg isometric exercise training on the immediate isometric post-exercise cardiovascular responses, and (2) to ascertain whether any changes in immediate post-exercise cardiovascular responses may be associated with training-induced adaptations in resting blood pressure. Methods: Thirteen normotensive males completed both isometric exercise training (IET) and control conditions, which were separated by 6 weeks. Participants performed a total of twelve training sessions; 4 * 2-minute bilateral-leg isometric exercise bouts separated by 3-minute rest periods, 3 days.wk-1. Results: 4-weeks of bilateral-leg IET resulted in a reduction in resting SBP (120 ± 12 to 115 ± 12 mmHg, p = 0.01). The intercept of the 5-minute post-exercise systolic blood pressure slope was lower (p = 0.015) following the 4-week training intervention. Individual changes in immediate post-exercise response SBP were also significantly correlated with reductions in resting SBP following 4-weeks of training. There were significant differences in the slopes of the first vs. final post-exercise BRS response (p = 0.009), and the intercepts of the HRR slopes (p = 0.04) recorded during the 5-minute post-exercise periods Conclusions: Four weeks of IET altered immediate cardiovascular responses to an individual IET session. Altered immediate responses were also associated with training induced reductions in resting SBP. To our knowledge, this is the first evidence suggesting very short-term (immediate) cardiovascular responses may be important in defining chronic reductions in resting blood pressure following a period of IET

    Role of hydroxycarbamide in prevention of complications in patients with sickle cell disease

    Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetically inherited condition caused by a point mutation in the beta globin gene. This results in the production of the abnormal hemoglobin, sickle hemoglobin (HbS). Hydroxycarbamide, is an antimetabolite/cytotoxic which works by inhibiting ribonucleotide reductase, blocking the synthesis of DNA and arresting cells in the S phase. In sickle cell anemia, it promotes fetal hemoglobin (HbF) synthesis, improves red cell hydration, decreases neutrophil and platelet count, modifies red cell endothelial cell interactions and acts as a nitric oxide donor. Trials have shown the clinical benefit of hydroxycarbamide in a subpopulation of adult patients with SCD, with a 44% reduction in the median annual rate of painful crises, a decrease in the incidence of acute chest syndrome and an estimated 40% reduction in overall mortality over a 9-year observational period. Its use in pediatrics has also been well established; trials have shown it is well tolerated and does not impair growth or development. In addition it decreases the number and duration of hospital attendences. A number of emerging uses of hydroxycarbamide currently are being investigated, such as stroke prevention

    Validity and reliability of the ‘Isometric Exercise Scale’ (IES) for measuring ratings of perceived exertion during continuous isometric exercise

    Purpose: Isometric exercise (IE) interventions have been shown to be effective at reducing resting arterial blood pressure (BP). IE intensity is generally determined using force, electromyography (EMG), heart rate (HR), or knee joint angle. However, ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) may provide a more accessible means of determining exercise intensity. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the validity of a specific Isometric Exercise Scale (IES) during a continuous incremental isometric wall squat test. Methods: Twenty-nine male participants completed 4 incremental IE tests. Each test consisted of 5 isometric wall squat intensities, determined by knee joint angles from 135° to 95°, each held for up to 2 minutes. The tests were continuous until volitional fatigue or completion of the 5 work stages. Throughout the exercise protocol, RPE (IES and Borg’s CR-10), HR and blood pressure were recorded. Results: The IES produced a strong positive linear relationship with the CR-10 (r = 0.967) . Additionally, strong positive relationships between the IES and wall squat duration (r = 0.849), HR (r = 0.819) and BP (r = 0.841) were seen. Intra-class correlation coefficients and coefficients of variations for the IES ranged from r = 0.81 to 0.91 and 4.5% to 54% respectively, with greater reliability seen at the higher workloads. Conclusions: The IES is a valid and reliable measure of RPE, exercise intensity, and it accurately represents the changes in physiological measures of exertion during IE; as such, the IES can be used as a useful additional measure of exercise intensity during IET interventions
